April Theme of the Month: Transformation
Transformation: The Quiet Power Beneath the Surface
"Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it changes the person who sees."
– B.K.S. Iyengar
In the rhythm of life, transformation is often seen as a grand event—a moment of awakening, a dramatic shift, a bold leap forward. And through the lens of Yoga and Ayurveda, transformation is more often a quiet, steady unfolding. It's not always visible on the surface. Like the roots of a perennial plant reaching deep into the earth, much of our change happens where no one else can see it, and sometimes even before we can recognize it ourselves.
Perennial plants are nature’s reminder that deep roots create lasting beauty. Though their flowers may retreat in winter, their essence remains alive and well beneath the soil, preparing for renewal in right time. In the same way, our inner work—through yoga, breath, awareness, and Ayurveda—creates strength and stability beneath the surface, even when external progress feels slow or even non-existent.
When we step onto the mat and create space for intentional awareness, we begin to cultivate these deep roots. We soften old patterns, quiet the mind, and nourish the body. We become more grounded, more adaptable. Over time, this subtle inner work begins to shift not just how we feel, but who we are. And, as Iyengar so beautifully reminds us, it changes not just the way we see the world—but the very person doing the seeing.
We can support our personal transformation off the mat, too. Here are some ways to connect to yourself and support your personal transformation:
Connect with Nature: We are a microcosm of the macrocosm. That is to say, we are inherently connected to Nature. Take some time this month to tend to your connection with nature. Go for a walk in a park or along the lake, get your hands dirty as you clean the yard or prepare your garden, crack the windows to bring refreshing spring air into your home.
Practice deep breathing: Deep belly breathing to foster the mind body connection. Even three deep breaths a day will make a difference. Conscious, deep belly breathing calms the nervous system, moves stagnation left over from winter, and centers awareness.
Journal: Allow yourself to let go and let it out on paper. Consider the ways you feel connected to yourself right now, and the ways you wish to connect with yourself. If you need a placee to start, try this journal prompt: What is growing in me beneath the surface right now?
At Moonflower, we hold space for these rooted transformations. Each breath, each pose, each mindful choice supports the deeper unfolding of your true nature. Ayurveda teaches us to honor our unique constitution and nature’s rhythms so our transformation is aligned with our truth—not forced, but organic.
If you feel like you’ve been growing beneath the surface, trust the process. Let the roots deepen. The blooms will come in time, with beauty and grace that’s all your own.
Bonus! A song that deeply resonates with the theme of quiet and slow Transformation. Always remember: You are not broken, You are not breaking; You are UNFOLDING.
