Awaken + Lighten: Ayurveda Tips for March
Holistic Practices to Support Seasonal Living in Brookfield, WI
In Ayurveda, March marks the gradual transition from Vata season into Kapha season as winter begins to soften and the first signs of spring emerge.
As the weather warms and snow begins to melt, the heavy and damp qualities of Kapha dosha start to increase in both the environment and the body. This shift can bring feelings of sluggishness, congestion, low motivation, or lingering winter fatigue.
March invites us to gently awaken the body after months of inward focus. By incorporating lightness, movement, warmth, and stimulating foods, we help clear accumulated heaviness while supporting a smooth transition into spring.
Tip #1: Eat Lighter Seasonal Foods
As Kapha begins to rise, shift toward lighter meals that support digestion. Steamed greens, bitter vegetables, legumes, and brothy soups help the body release winter heaviness.
Tip #2: Add Warm + Stimulating Spices
Spices such as ginger, turmeric, black pepper, mustard seed, and cinnamon help rekindle digestive fire and reduce the sluggish qualities of Kapha.
Tip #3: Increase Daily Movement
March is a time to gradually increase activity. Brisk walks, energizing yoga flows, cycling, or dancing help circulate blood, lymph, and energy after winter’s stillness. At Moonflower, our INSPIRE (Strong Flow) class is perfect for this time of year!
Tip #4: Rise with the Sun
Sleeping late can increase Kapha heaviness. Waking closer to sunrise supports clarity, energy, and alignment with the natural rhythms of spring.
Tip #5: Refresh Your Environment
Spring is a natural time for clearing. Opening windows, decluttering, and refreshing your living space can support mental clarity and invite new energy for the season ahead.
