Oral Care: The Ayurvedic Way
Discover how a mindful Ayurvedic oral care routine can transform your oral health and overall well-being.
What Is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, the “science of life,” is an ancient system of holistic healing that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. Rooted in nature and balance, Ayurveda promotes wellness by harmonizing the body, mind, and spirit.
The term Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit:
Ayur = Life
Veda = Knowledge or Science
At its core, Ayurveda is the science of self-healing—understanding your unique constitution (dosha), following intuition, and building daily rhythms that support long-term vitality.
Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, Ayurvedic health is individualized. It’s about restoring equilibrium through lifestyle choices, diet, and rituals that counter imbalance. Ayurveda works alongside modern medicine, enhancing awareness and empowering you to live with balance and intention.
Ayurveda and the Art of Daily Routine
A key pillar of Ayurveda is dinacharya—the daily routine. A consistent morning and evening ritual creates stability, supports immunity, and nurtures physical and emotional balance.
Among these daily practices, oral care is essential. The mouth is viewed as the gateway to the body; maintaining oral hygiene directly influences digestion, immunity, and even mental clarity.
The Ayurvedic Oral Care Routine
Morning Routine
1. Tongue Scrape (Jihwa Prakshalana)
During sleep, toxins and bacteria accumulate on the tongue. Scraping removes this buildup, freshens the breath, and stimulates digestive fire (agni).
How to Tongue Scrape:
Hold each end of the scraper with both hands.
Place the curved edge at the back of your tongue.
Gently pull forward, rinsing between strokes.
Repeat 5–7 times until clean.
2. Brush Teeth (Dantadhavana)
Use a natural herbal toothpaste like Auromere Fresh Mint Ayurvedic Toothpaste made with neem, peelu, and mint. These botanicals cleanse, strengthen gums, and support the oral microbiome.
3. Floss
Gently clean between teeth to prevent plaque buildup and maintain gum health.
4. Oil Pull (Gandusha / Kavala Graha)
Oil pulling draws out impurities, nourishes tissues, and strengthens teeth and gums. Begin by adding oil pulling to your routine and gradually increase to every day.
How to Oil Pull:
Swish 1–2 teaspoons of Banyan Botanicals Daily Swish.
Move it gently through the teeth and gums for 2 to 10 minutes. Start by oil pulling for 2 minutes and gradually increase time. You can oil pull for up to 20 minutes - feel free to complete other morning routine practices like your morning skincare routine while you oil pull.
Spit into a trash can or toilet (not the sink to protect your pipes).
5. Rinse with Water (Optional)
Finish with a gentle warm water rinse for a refreshed, hydrated mouth.
Evening Routine
A calming evening routine completes your day and supports oral and digestive health overnight.
Brush Teeth – Remove residue from meals and buildup from the day.
Floss – Clean between teeth to prevent overnight plaque.
Rinse – Swish with clean water or a gentle natural mouth rinse.
